Let's start with a cake that took us a little bit out of our comfort zone. We were asked to do a GI Joe Snake Eyes cake for a little boy's 5th birthday party with a ninja theme. First off, neither of us knew who the heck Snake Eyes even was...thank goodness for Google and the little boy's helpful mother who sent us several pictures. Nevertheless, Snake Eyes has an edgy aesthetic that we weren't sure how would translate onto fondant. See what I mean?
However, we were determined to give Luke the best-looking (and tasting) Snake Eyes cake he could have imagined, so it was back to the drawing board...literally. Every cake we make starts with a sketch, and after a lot of brainstorming and some crumpled paper, this is what we finally had:
Which after a lot of time, patience, and hard work in the kitchen, led to this:
And did I mention it tasted incredible?! The cake itself was a vanilla butter cake layer over a chocolate cake layer with our vanilla cream cheese buttercream frosting in between the layers and on the outside. Delicious!
The birthday boy was quite pleased with the end product and we couldn't be happier! This experience reminded us that going outside of one's comfort zone is not only necessary for growth, but it's also a lot of fun. We love a good challenge, so bring it on!
Simply Sweet,
Jennifer & Whitney
